Brisbane International Jazz Festival (BIJF) presents Gretchen Parlato
Gretchen Parlato (USA)
Renowned for technical brilliance and a crystalline voice, LA born vocalist Gretchen Parlato fuses jazz with undertones of Brazilian and African beats displaying the unique and seductive vocal style she has perfected.
Throughout her 20 year career Grammy nominated Parlato has been working with contemporary jazz legends including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding and Terence Blanchard, mesmerising audiences from Japan to New York with pristine phrasing and inventive interpretations of jazz standards.
Together with her sublime band, Parlato captivates the senses with intoxicating improvisations, sensual transformations of jazz classics and masterful original work.
"...transfixing...she fashions a mellow, drifting sound informed by Brazil and Wayne Shorter and organic R&B."
- The New York Times
"Gretchen is a singer with a deep, almost magical connection to the music. She takes a lot of chances with her understated style, and it works. Every note is expressive, powerful, and pretty. And most important, her heart is in the right place."
- Herbie Hancock
"I think in an inconspicuous way, Gretchen Parlato knows how to play the same instrument that Frank Sinatra played. There's no one out there like Gretchen. She's true blue."
- Wayne Shorter
"Her voice is a conflux where hope, sensuality and tragedy all merge...
the most original jazz singer in a generation.
- Steve Greenlee, Boston Globe
