Mulatu Astatke is the Father of Ethiopian Jazz and the first African to graduate from the Berklee College of Music. A household name in his native country this legendary musician, composer and arranger blends traditional Ethiopian music, modern jazz, Latin rhythms and Afro funk to create distinctive work that has been sampled by the likes of Kanye West, Nas and Damien Marley.
Astatke’s long term relationship with Black Jesus Experience has culminated in three landmark albums and sell-out performances from New York to Nairobi. Their current collaborative project is a meditation on the evolution of humanity and music which recognises the primacy of Africa in the birth of both.
