This recently formed ensemble, led by bassist and composer Andrew Shaw, was created to perform older works by the leader, spanning the last twenty-five years, along with lesser known compositions by some of his heroes such as Charles Mingus, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and Thelonius Monk. Until a few years ago, Shaw had been composing music for ensembles led by others, rather than for his own. Shaw formed his own band, Road Plant, in 2009 and composed a repertoire specifically for it. This quartet, however, has been assembled to pull together the earlier compositions and perform them as part of a single repertoire. Along with Shaw, the group features Lachlan McKenzie on trumpet, John Reeves on piano, and Tom Robb on drums.
